The Lower Yuba river from highway 20
bridge to Sycamore campground is a beautiful wild trout fishery.
This section of the Yuba river has a lot of long riffles and and a
few deep pools which hold an amazing amount of wild trout year round.
combine this with the constant flows of cold water from Englebright dam, and you get one of the best
Fly Fishing rivers in northern
California. Fly fishing the Yuba river can be done by float
or wade almost all year round. Steelhead also share this river
with the large wild rainbow population in the months of November
thru May. You can find dry fly hatches all year round and in
the summer months it is hard to beat a large hopper tossed near
the bank for exciting dry fly action.
The lower Yuba river is host to just about any type of fly
fishing you prefer. Nymphs will produce fish all year long.
Dry fly's can be used at some point of the day all year long and if you
like to use a sink tip, hold on to your rod, fish up to 20 inches +
can be hooked on a large woolly bugger or minnow imitation.
During the salmon run you can also catch large rainbow while drifting
an egg pattern.
Some say that steelhead are
present all year long in the Yuba river. The only thing I
am sure of is the fact that the rainbows fight like
steelhead all year long. During the steelhead season a
nymph and an egg pattern is hard to beat. Good numbers
of half pounder's and adult steelhead allow for good success
rates and you usually catch a few trout in the process.
This year we will also be doing some two
handed spey rod trips on the Lower Yuba river. These
trips are targeted towards the traditional swing of the wet
fly for large rainbow trout and Steelhead. The Yuba
river is also a great river to use the new Switch rod's like
the Sage 6110-4. Its amazing how well you can cover
the whole river.
If I had to choose one place to
guide a first time fly fisherman the Yuba river would be it.
You will have a great chance of hooking up on your first
time out.
